SOME SAD NEWS
SPENCER CHILDS
FOUNDER OF THIS KNOWLES HILL SCHOOL WEB SITE
Sadly I have just been informed that Spencer died recently,
and the funeral was held on the 5th of January.
I understand that he had been ill for some time.
Spencer was born in Torquay in 1945, but spent most of his married life in Lewes
in Sussex.
He worked for most of his career in London, but moved
back to Totnes in Devon on his retirement in 2008.
Spencer started at Knowles Hill when he was about 4 in the Nursery class,
and progressed right through the school until the age of about 11, in 55/56.
He and all the Childs children were vegetarians which was quite unusual in
those days, and they all sat at separate tables in the dining room.
Spencer Specialised in prototype
electronic engineering,
which meant he did not normally take products through to production.
In co-operation with his clients he often made production like fully working
models.
In this way he enabled them to make a better assessment of
their product ideas before they committed to actual production.
He worked extensively with other designers and design engineers
over many years in both product design and art installations.
Spencer had a varied career with many interests including photography,
playing and recording music and poetry.
SPENCER CHILDS - 1945 - 2012 --- RIP
Having set up and operated the site
dedicated to the great School, Spencer Childs
found that he was unable to
devote enough time to continue running it,
and asked me to take it over.
I shorten it a bit, and tried to add a
few new items including some photos that I recently found.
The site will be a
bit more slanted towards my own memories,
and any comments will be my
own rather then Spencer's.
I started at KH in I think 1952 or 53 having first been
at Bickington village school.
I went on to Churchills and then Sandford
Orleigh, (all part of KHS)
leaving in 1962 to join the Army Junior Leaders!
Via the
internet, I have been able to contact a number of ex KHS and SO
people, and
we had a great SO reunion in 2004.
If any of you out there have anything to
add to the site please let me know.
