How Lorraine Humber was Found.

THE DAY MARGIE OLDRIEVE (MUSCOTT)
 VISITED ANNE GOTTING (BEVAN)

I had seen Margie several times over the last ten years.  The last time was Mothering Sunday when she said she would come and visit me when her elderly dog had passed away.  Anyway, 10 days ago she rang to say she was coming.  She arrived at 12 noon.  We had a bite to eat and then set off to do a bit of Christmas shopping in Taunton.  We passed this newish shop with unusual bits and pieces and decided to see if they had any interesting presents; in fact we nearly didn’t stop.  Having been in the shop for about 10 minutes I turned round to see Margie talking to someone.  I just thought how amazing it was that she should visit Taunton for one day and should bump into someone she knew.  I joined the two of them.  Margie was saying “don’t I know you” … “from school” … “which school” … “Sandford Orleigh”.  At this point I thought well really if this person was from Sandford Orleigh then surely I should know her as well but didn’t immediately recognise her.  It was Lorraine Humber, as we knew her.  The were great sounds of jubilation.  I think the whole shop got to experience this reunion.  We had last seen her when she was 12.

We had a quick chat … I think everyone in the shop was looking around because we made a bit of a din … and decided to got our separate ways, do our shopping and return when we had finished to chat further over a cup of tea … and this we did.

Sadly the shop in which they met has now closed down.

Lorraine passed her 11+ and went on to Teignmouth Grammar School as a border.  For family reasons she then left Teignmouth Grammar School and went to one or two more schools.  She is at last happily married for the third time and lives in Taunton but does not have any children.  We parted thinking how amazing it was to have bumped into each other … particularly as we had just been talking about her over lunch, while recalling school day memories.

I had made arrangements with Karen Budd (Young) to take Margie over for coffee the following morning and so we thought we would take Lorraine with us to surprise her.  We spent a couple of hours sharing memories and photos (as one does) and had a most enjoyable morning.  We took Lorraine home at about lunchtime and I am sure we will make arrangements to meet up, probably for a cup of tea or coffee after a Saturday morning shop.
We discovered several coincidences that day.  She knew my street – her husband had grown up there … in the house that now belongs to a friend of mine and she works in the same office as a friend of Karen’s and with the husband of a colleague of mine.

CAROL REID HAS BEEN FOUND
AND IS LIVING IN WEST SUSSEX.
Her father saw the press release in the local paper,
and sent her the web site details.

HERE'S HER STORY.
 A Potted History.

After my four years at SO I moved on to Edgehill Girls' College in Bideford which was very different and much less enjoyable than my wonderful time with all of you!   I ran away in a rather unsuccessful bid to make a statement about how much I, and some of my pals, disliked our Head of House.  Then I moved on to Torquay Girls' Grammar, and eventually moved up to London to live with my mother, Margaret Reid Campion.  I stupidly turned down a place at Middlesex hospital to study Physiotherapy (my mother was a Fellow of the Chartered Society) and was packed off to do a Secretarial Course at the London College of Secretaries.   I was such a good student (apparently!) that they asked me to stay on and teach typing which I did for a year before becoming disillusioned because attitudes were very stuffy and all the bright new ideas we younger teachers had fell on deaf ears.
A chum from college secured me a great job working for the Director of Personnel of C.T. Bowring in the City of London where I stayed for 4 years before moving into Management Recruitment Consultancy as PA to the Chairman. Whilst caretaking the Executive Secretaries division I put myself forward on a shortlist (of ONE!) to work as the PA to the Chief Registrar at the John Lewis Partnership and got the job. At that time I got married and stayed at John Lewis until the birth of my first child, Richard. Two years later I moved with my husband and son to Hong Kong, had a second son Jonathan (who is there as we speak for the Rugby Sevens). I lived in HK for 14 years where I became involved with the Vietnamese Refugees and also worked for an Indian charity that took me to Calcutta working with the Charity, "Future Hope", that took in and educated street children. I also traveled generally in India with an Indian friend doing it native style which was quite an education.   Apart from that I had lots of interests and hobbies and virtually lived on a tennis court!
On my return (by this time separated, now divorced) I moved into the world of alternative medicine.  I am now a practicing Reflexologist and Nutritional Therapist and set up a Complementary Health Centre and Physiotherapy & Sports Injuries Clinic, plus Sports/Health shop, with a Physiotherapist here in the village of Cuckfield.
These days I spend a lot of time in America where I recently gained a Skipper's license with the American Sailing Association and am looking to gain as much experience as possible.

Despite my rather gypsy-style life I hope very much that I might be in the country so that I can attend a future reunion.
